Understanding Music (and your connection to it)

On the first day, when we discussed the question of how does music play a role in your life, many of our answers included something along the lines of, it connects to our emotions. This is very true, but our teacher encouraged us to think more deeply on this subject. That is what we have learned, and that is what we have been doing. I have discovered that music can save people. Why do people write music? Well according to Kinan Azmeh, "It takes emotions that you can't describe or don't even know your feeling, and makes it something real and understandable." That idea really stuck with me. I don't compose music, like he does, I only have the songs I've made in this class or tried to write when I was little. But as a listener to many different types of music, I can, in a way, understand what he means. While I will never know the exact feelings and emotions that were put into music, I can comprehend my own when I listen to music. And ever person will interpret this differently. That's part of what makes this idea so cool. Each person can take music and use it for what they need. If they are happy, they can add to this feeling with music that also makes them happy. And is they are sad, they can relate the sounds and words of sad music and feel comfort in them. But each of the said music that they listen to will be different depending on the person. It is this ability of variety that makes music so unique. In the past, it has saved lives, by being a friend to people, one that will never leave and is always there no matter what. I value the importance of this so much more after taking this class. I hope that everyone else can also find peace with themselves and others through the music they love.
