In class, we learned about some of the places that the members of the Silk Road Ensemble came from. First, we learned a bit about the silk road and it's history. It was a place where culture was spread from many different areas, along the path. This makes the name "Silk Road Ensemble" very fitting. Then we dove deeper into the places where some of the members originated from. We focused on Syria, Spain, China, Iran, and the United States. We saw how each place had its own tragic history (or present) and how music helped the people push through and overcome their hardships. We learned about the Syrian refugee crisis, and how musicians visit the camps to spread happiness and joy to the people there. We learned about how in Galicia, Spain, the bagpipes represent generations of family's and have been the sound of the city for as long as people can remember. We learned about the Chinese revolution, that tried to end music and creativity. But it was and still is a force that can never be "ended." And we learned about the unrest in Iran, that is forcing musicians and artist out of their homes indefinitely. It is inspiring to hear that despite the sacrifices, they will never stop doing what they are passionate about. All of these places and the people in them have had different struggles that they have had to deal with. But music is a constant thread between them all. One that can never be taken away.
