Important People

Updated: Jan 26, 2021

While studying the Silk Road Ensemble, we looked closely at almost all of the members. For some, we learned together as a class about their stories. For others, we learned about them individually and shared out to our classmates. Each person was completely unique and special. We were all asked what they bring to the group, and the answer was almost always, something different from what any other person could bring. The people we learned about as a class were Kinan Azmeh (who we actually got to speak to!), Yo-Yo Ma, Kayhan Kalhor, and Christina Pato. I then chose Reylon Yount to study personally. Yo-Yo Ma is the creator of this group. Without his idea and passion (and skill playing the cello), this whole project would not be possible. From the interviews that we saw about him, he seems like such a friendly person who truly only wants to spread kindness. I think we should all try and be like him. Mr. Azmeh writes all of his music for other people. From talking to him, we learned that his music is meant to heal and you can hear that when you listen to it. Mr. Kahlor has been through so many obstacles in his life, and his music has gotten him through them. They share his story with other people so that we can put a stop to the unrest in Iran and allow others to not have to go through what he did. Christina Pato, is a very lively and fun person. You can see that every time she is on or off stage performing. She uses music to share her home and family to the rest of the world. And finally, Reylon Yount is one of the youngest members and plays the yangqin. He is a master of the element and really shared it with the rest of the world. All of these people take theirs skills and come together. Everyone has an important role to play, and without them the Silk Road Ensemble would be incomplete. There is a space in your life that would feel empty without you.
