When we shifted our focus from other people around the world, to ourselves and our class mates, we truly got to know each other better. We worked with slides describing our musical identity, to interviews with our parents (slides below). Here we got to combine learning about music, but also how it relates to us and our lives. First it is important to understand, as I took away from my interview with my mom who converted, that your culture is not set in stone. It is ever changing and progressing as you discover yourself more and more growing up. My mom was once Episcopalian, and is now Jewish. As I'm sure is true with many other religions and cultures, on the holidays, music is a very important aspect. We sing songs along with all the other families in the world who are also celebrating the holiday. This is a very special feeling and it's really cool to think that these songs connect all of us, no matter who or where we are. We also talked about how these holidays bring us all together. These two concepts combined, just make for a very joyous thought of family and friends and strangers all combined. We also got to take what we learned about our culture and make a piece that related to how we interpreted the information. I thought about it as mixing new and old music together. My original composition is in the album at the bottom of the home page if you want to listen. I hope that this will inspire you to take some time to sit down and talk with the people you love to learn more about your family history, and how it relates to music. And maybe you'll want to try and make some music of your own!
